Dentistry in Egypt: internship, licensing and specialising
The internship year, registering with the Dental Syndicate, and the routes into a dental specialty.

1. The internship year
Dental graduates complete a supervised internship year before they can practise independently. It is the time to build clinical confidence across the main areas of general dentistry.
- Keep a log of the procedures you observe and perform under supervision, with dates and supervisors.
- Notice which areas you enjoy — orthodontics, oral surgery, endodontics, prosthodontics, paediatric dentistry, periodontics and others.
2. Registration and licensing
After the internship, dentists register with the Egyptian Dental Syndicate and obtain a licence to practise from the Ministry of Health and Population. Confirm the current documents and steps with both before you apply.
3. Early career
- Many new dentists start in a Ministry of Health post, a private clinic or a dental centre, often combining more than one.
- Postgraduate study — a university master's degree (MSc) and doctorate, or a fellowship programme — is the usual route to a recognised specialty.
- Short courses can build a skill, but check what a course certificate actually allows you to do before paying for it: a course is not a specialty qualification unless the listing names the body that accredits it.
